The Situation

A Saturday in December. A ladder in the attic.

He was getting the Christmas decorations down. He fell the wrong way. He is still in the yellow shirt he was wearing that afternoon.

Now he is in an old movie theater, every seat filled, the house lights low. A quiet man in round spectacles has a few questions for him. His name is Crale. He is very polite.

He has not woken.
This theater is where his mind has gone to wait.

A man in a yellow shirt and gray shorts sits alone in the middle of a crowded, darkened theater full of dark-suited figures.
The only warm color in the room.

How It Plays

Three layers up. One way out.

Layer I

The Vegetative State

The body keeps its own time: breath, pulse, sleep and waking. No one behind the eyes. Yet.

Layer II

The Minimally Conscious State

He is there in flickers now. A blink when asked. A hand that almost closes.

Layer III

The Confusional State

Awake, and not yet sure what is real. One height remains.

There is no meter on the screen. Miss, and the theater starts to slip: the picture drifts, the room goes wrong. Answer, and it holds. The room is the meter.

Pick a World

Seven worlds. One host.

The questions come from classic television's strangest stories, sorted into seven worlds. Pick one, and the stage changes to meet it. Crale is always already there.

Cosmos

Space, and what waits in it

Reckoning

What comes due

Bargain

Wishes and deals

Mirror

The face that isn't yours

Past

Trapped by memory

Small Town

The neighbors are watching

Alone

The last one left

A red EXIT sign, lit.
